Introducing: The New and Improved Sumo Embed Code™

Product Updates

Today, we’re making Sumo faster on your site — and laying the foundation for more speed improvements this year.

Introducing the brand-new Sumo embed code.

WHAT IS IT?

The Sumo embed code is the piece of code (a JavaScript snippet) that everyone uses to install Sumo on their websites.

Our technical team has been nerding out for months over making the code better. Tinkering and tweaking, optimizing and testing.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

Nobody likes a slow page, so we’re updating the Sumo embed code to help you convert leads even faster!

Our goal: Optimize the Sumo backend to be as compact and unobtrusive as possible — so we can help your Google Page Speed score go up.

Plus, an improved Google Page Speed means more people using your site, becoming customers, and signing up for your email list. Yes!

HOW DO YOU USE IT…

Are you using WordPress? Just update your Sumo plugin to version 1.28. Easy-peasy. If you run into any struggles, follow these Sumo WordPress Plugin instructions.

Using Shopify? You’ve already been updated. Sumo is basically magic on Shopify.

Did you install Sumo manually? If you’re not using WordPress or Shopify, you probably did install manually.

(And if you’re not sure how you installed Sumo, bug your web developer.)

To update the manual Sumo embed code, all you need to do is remove the old embed code in the <head> of your web pages and add the new embed code below in the <body> of those same pages (make sure you move to <body>, otherwise the code won't work).

<script async>
(function(s,u,m,o,j,v){j=u.createElement(m);v=u.getElementsByTagName(m)[0];
j.async=1;j.src=o;j.dataset.sumoSiteId='SITE_ID_GOES_HERE';
v.parentNode.insertBefore(j,v)})(window,document,'script','//load.sumo.com/');
</script>

Note: Don't forget to remove the old embed code, or you'll get a "duplicate code" error; and don't forget to replace SITE_ID_GOES_HERE with your actual Sumo Site ID!

If you get lost, follow these step-by-step instructions that our Customer Success Hero Jesse “Rocket Scientist” Rhew wrote on how to install the new Sumo embed code manually.

Or, if you’re looking for an installation guide on your website platform — BigCommerce, Magento, Google Tag Manager, and more — click here to see our Sumo Installation Guides page.

Once you get the Sumo embed code updated on your site, you’ll notice immediate speed improvements.
